Why do I work on staying fit?  Here are my whys:

  • Quite Time.

I only get so much of it being a working mom.  Maybe you’re not a mom.  Maybe you’re a dad.  Maybe you don’t have kids.  Maybe you’re a busy professional.  It doesn’t matter.  Life is loud.  Creating a quiet space is crucial to me in so many ways.  I get to think without interruption, listen to my music (sometimes I even air drum while I’m running) and disappear.  I often think the fact that working out is good for me physically is a side bonus to getting quiet personal time because I just need that space so much.  45 minutes and I’m good to get back at it!

  • I Only Have One Body.

Like it or not, we only have one.  I want to take care of my body while I’m still physically able.  Some day, if I become unable, I don’t want the reason to be due to something I could have prevented in the past.  I’m not willing to gamble on it.  Look at your family medical history for inspiration to take care of yourself NOW.

  • Mental Well-being.

Exercising clears my thoughts, gives me new perspective on issues going on in my life, gives me an outlet for anger and frustration, and energizes me to do the needed things to get through my day.  All of these things make my mind (and, in turn, my family) healthier and happier.

  • Because God Said So.

And He’s at the top of my listen-to chain.  I Cor. 6:19-20:  “…your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you.  You are not your own, you were bought with a price.  So glorify God in your body.”  But I also try to keep it in check and all things in their place…because… I Tim. 4:8 says “For while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.”
